Area Description
We’ve been visiting Corfu for over 30 years now and it’s
a place we really love. We’ve spent many wonderful holidays soaking
up the variety of experiences it has to offer. There’s something
for everyone - from beautiful beaches to elegant architecture and a thriving
nightlife. But the thing we love most about Corfu is that despite the
ever-growing tourist market it has retained its natural beauty and charm.
Much of the island remains exactly as it was before the tourists came.
Our favourite place on the island is Corfu Town - it’s an absolute
must to visit and we love the way it blends the new with the old. It’s
the largest town in the Ionian Islands and is built between two Venetian
castles. We like to wander around its streets, visiting the thriving mass
of shops and businesses set amongst some very distinctive buildings and
churches. There are lots of narrow alleyways leading to hidden squares
and we particularly enjoy visiting the Esplanade (Spianada Square), which
is one of the biggest squares in Europe and the hub of Corfiot life. It’s
a wonderful place to grab a table in one of the many café bars
and watch the world go by.
The food on the island is in the Greek tradition, with lots of olive
oil, onion, garlic and pepper in most recipes, and it is absolutely delicious.
We’ve had some wonderful fresh salads here, including the unique
roka and glistrida varieties. Make sure you sample them here because you
won’t get them anywhere else!
