Mild winters and beautiful spring and autumn weather are perfect for playing golf or just soaking up the sunny weather on the beach or around the resort pool. Golf in the Costa del Sol has undergone a boom in the last 20 years, with around 20 new courses constructed. EAST COAST

Here you’ll find excellent golf in the Costa del Sol. While many prefer to stay near Malaga Airport, on a package holiday in the high-rise resorts of Fuengirola and Benalmadena, others prefer the mountain retreats with their spectacular views and traditional Spanish culture. With the longest beach and a flourishing resort, the area around Fuengirola is the more exciting, with lots of bars and cafes and a good open-air market. It’s also less expensive than Marbella. Centred around a busy marina, with the Sierra de Mijas mountains as a backdrop, Benalmadena has plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars, and its shingle beach is a magnet for sun lovers. The east coast is definitely the best choice for those looking for more economical Costa del Sol golf holidays.

CENTRAL COAST

For more upmarket golf holidays on the Costa del Sol choose the central coast.  With stunning yacht harbours, upmarket shops, nightclubs and restaurants, the Central Coast is an upmarket option for those chasing the ultimate golf experience. Marbella, with its chic shopping and smart restaurants, is one of the world’s most glamorous resort destinations. While the casino, trendy nightclubs and exclusive shops play host to the wealthy, there are plenty of cafes and bars, specialising in such delights as paella and sangria, for the rest of us. Look for the shops with better prices, hidden in back streets of the old town. In Puerto Banus, further west, you’ll find a luxury boat harbour and the fine Corte Ingles department store, as well as many stylish boutiques featuring clothing by Versace, Armani and Moschino.

The famous Valle del Golf, on a winding road just to the north of Marbella, features one great course adjoining another. Our recommendations for the best golf in the Costa del Sol include Aloha Golf, Las Brisas and Los Naranjos. Finally, don’t miss the Saturday morning flea market near the Nueva Andalucia bullring where all kinds of wares are on offer, from jewellery to rugs, and plants to Spanish antiques.

At San Roque, check out the exclusive Sotogrande, where broad avenues and stately homes abut the Royal Sotogrande golf course, a marina and polo fields. There are excellent courses to be found at La Canada, Almenara and Alcaidesa, where you can experience golf holiday on the Costa del Sol at their best.
