Area Description
We just love to visit Madeira at any time of the year. It has a permanent
spring-like climate that makes it a perfect year-round golfing destination.
Thanks to its unique environment, we can indulge ourselves with its abundance
of tropical fruits, Atlantic fresh fish, seafood and of course the superb
wine.
We rate Madeira as the most beautiful of the Atlantic Islands. Its lush
valleys, green mountains and beautiful flowers simply have to be seen
to be believed. Words cannot do them justice.
Another thing we like is that the island is not a mass tourist destination
so quality tourism has developed and this has helped retain its true character.
Old traditions have been preserved and the many celebrations include the
Carnival in February/March, the Flower Festival in April and the Wine
Festival in September.
Whether you stay in one of our hotels in the Funchal area or not, we
recommend you visit Madeira’s capital city. It’s built in
an enormous amphitheatre and has many small, narrow, cobbled streets.
It got its name from the vast amounts of fennel (funcho) that used to
grow there. Although it’s home to over half of the island’s
population it still has an almost village-like feel to it. We love to
explore it on foot, admiring its varied sights and sounds. Our favourite
spot is the market - The Mercado dos Lavradores. It’s the heart
of Funchal, selling fruit and vegetables, fish, meat, flowers, handbags
and more, and it’s so full of life, colour and glamour that you
really shouldn’t miss it.
