Penina Golf Resort
The Resort
Few names inspire the same kind of reaction from golfers as Penina, whose lofty position in the hierarchy of European golf resorts remains intact after decades at the top. The resort and its ties to Sir Henry Cotton attract huge volumes of repeat visitors, which the recent updates to the accommodation and public areas have only helped to reinforce.
The famous white façade of the Penina hotel, operated by the highly respected Le Meridien brand, overlooks the outdoor pool, lounge area and the golf courses, of which there are three; the Henry Cotton designed Championship Course is joined by two nine-hole layouts ? the Resort and Academy ? for a complete golfing experience that is among the most popular in Europe.
Championship Golf at Penina
Having played host to multiple European Tour events, most notably a clutch of Portuguese Opens, Le Meridien Penina is best known for its formidable golfing reputation. Follow in famous footsteps in taking on the renowned Championship Course, devised by Sir Henry Cotton, which is still ranked highly and presents a tough examination of golf. Built in 1966, the Championship Course is a well established par-73 layout that is entrenched in the Algarve elite.
Adding variation to the golfing diet during your break is no issue as Penina boasts a further 18 holes; the Resort Course may only have nine holes, but it is a par-35 that is designed and constructed to championship standard and is a wonderful accompaniment to its more senior neighbour. Completing the 36-hole complex is the Academy Course, ideal for learners yet also ideal for more advanced players looking to sharpen a short game.
