The Resort
Situated on the northwestern tip of Malaysia’s Langkawi Island, near the border with Thailand, The Datai Langkawi is one of the very best resorts in the Far East. It nestles within pristine rainforest leading down to a private white sand beach, and is not only a stunning hideaway with discreet footpaths through the jungle connecting the resort’s free-standing private villas and pools, but a little haven of luxury.
The beach overlooks the azure waters of the Andaman Sea, where you can simply laze, or choose from the full range of watersports on offer. Then there is, of course, the renowned 18-hole championship Datai Bay Golf Course and for the really active there are other pursuits too such as mountain-biking. Located just 30 minutes away by car from the island's international airport with flights coming in from Changi Airport in Singapore and London (twice a week), this is a resort that really will take your breath away.
Golf
The Datai Bay golf course enjoys a unique setting in the heart of the rainforest, between the magnificent Mat Cincang Mountain Range and the Andaman Sea. Renowned as one of the region's most exclusive 18-hole golf courses, the facility was opened to play in 1992 and since then it has become one of the most renowned golf courses in the region and has been voted The Most Scenic Golf Course in Malaysia.
The 6,600-yard, par-72 course is surrounded by thousand -year-old forest with imposing Gunung Mat Chin-Chang to the west and The Andaman Sea to the east. The fairways are impeccable and the holes are satisfyingly varied in design, with tricky uphill and downhill lies, undulating fairways, fast greens and surrounded by dense jungle.
This is by no means a slugger’s course but one that requires strategy and careful club selection. Datai Bay can entertain and challenge all golfers, from scratch players to beginners, and the stunning scenery will make a round here live long in the memory.
