The Homestead

The Homestead

The Resort

Surrounded by the splendour of the Allegheny Mountains, The Homestead welcomed its first guests to the beautiful Virginia countryside a decade before the American Revolution. Presidents and princes are among the guests who have "taken the waters" in the legendary healing springs. But it’s also a thoroughly modern destination in terms of services and facilities.

Resort amenities include three renowned golf courses and a luxury spa. Outdoor activities include horseback and carriage rides, trap, skeet and sporting clays, tennis, miles of scenic hiking trails, indoor and outdoor pools, fitness centre, fly fishing, falconry, ice skating and mountain biking.

This is all allied to superb hospitality, elegant accommodations and distinctive Southern charm in an idyllic Virginia setting. With an historic ambience, rich traditions, and a seemingly endless array of indoor and outdoor activities, you’ll find endless ways to make a trip to The Homestead one you’ll never forget.

Golf

There are three historic courses to enjoy. The first is the Cascades Course, regarded by many as the finest mountain course in the country. It offers challenging holes set against the backdrop of Virginia's breathtaking Allegheny Mountains. Sam Snead launched his career on this fabled Virginia mountain golf course. The Cascades uses its varied terrain to influence play, not to dictate it. Therefore, talented players can use the slopes and roll to their advantage, but less skilled golfers will not find themselves penalized by forced carries or unfair hazard placement.

The Homestead's Old Course was completed in 1892, and enjoys the distinction of having the nation's oldest first tee in continuous use. And as the game has evolved over time, so has The Old Course, with updates by William S. Flynn and Rees Jones. Abundant fairway contouring gives most shots a side hill, uphill, or downhill lie to smallish greens, making approach shots interesting.

The Lower Cascades Course features a peaceful stream at the valley floor but don't let this lull you into a false sense of confidence. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. in 1963, it features Jones' trademark runway tee boxes, wide-open fairways, severe green contouring with exaggerated breaks, and strategically placed bunkers, for a competitive golf game. The Lower Cascades has hosted U.S. Men's Amateur qualifying rounds and is a serious test of anyone’s game.
